Your Ultimate Guide to Scrapping Your Car
Note: You don’t need to read all this stuff if you don’t want to.
Simply sign up and our onboarding process will make everything clear and simple to follow.
When an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) removes your car for scrapping in the UK, the owner typically needs to provide specific documentation
to prove ownership and facilitate the legal disposal process. Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need to show:
This is the most important document. You will need to:
Sign Section 4 (the yellow section, formerly Section 9) of the V5C logbook. This part confirms that you are no longer the registered keeper and that the vehicle is being scrapped at an ATF.
Give this signed Section 4 to the ATF. The ATF is legally required to send this section to the DVLA to notify them that the vehicle has been destroyed.
Keep the V5C/3 (yellow) tear-off slip for your records. This is your proof of notification until you receive confirmation from the DVLA.
🪪 2. Proof of Identity (Photo ID)
While not a strict legal requirement for scrapping itself, most reputable ATFs will ask for your photo identification (such as a driving licence or passport)
to verify your identity. This helps them comply with anti-money laundering regulations and prevent the illegal disposal of vehicles.
📬 3. Proof of Address
A utility bill from the last 3 months with your address on it.
Note: Our partner ATFs cannot take your car if you cannot provide all of the above (V5C, Photo ID, and Proof of Address).
In such cases, your £50 "commitment deposit" will be “captured” as per our terms.
Legal Requirements for Scrapping Your Car in the UK Checklist
When scrapping your car in the UK, there are several important legal requirements you need to meet to ensure it's done correctly and legally.
Here's a checklist to guide you:
✅ 1. Use an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)
Your vehicle must be scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). These are licensed sites that meet environmental standards for handling waste vehicles.
Why? ATFs are the only places legally allowed to depollute and dismantle End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) in an environmentally sound manner. They also have the authority to issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD).
🪪 2. Obtain a Certificate of Destruction (CoD)
You must get a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) from the ATF once your vehicle has been accepted for scrapping.
This is your official proof that the vehicle has been taken off the road and legally disposed of.
Why? The CoD is crucial for informing the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) that your vehicle no longer exists.
Without it, you could remain liable for fines (e.g. for not having insurance or MOT) or taxes.
🚗3. Inform the DVLA
The ATF will usually notify the DVLA of your car’s destruction electronically. However, it’s your responsibility to
ensure the DVLA is informed that you're no longer the registered keeper.
What to do:
If you have the V5C logbook (registration certificate), you’ll need to complete Section 9 of the V5C (or Section 4 for V5Cs issued after April 2019),
recording the date of sale and the details of the ATF, according to Car.co.uk. You can send the tear-out section to the DVLA or notify them online.
If you don’t have your V5C, you’ll need to write to the DVLA with your vehicle’s registration number, make, model, your name, and the date you sold/transferred it to the ATF. The ATF might still issue a CoD, but you’ll need to ensure the DVLA update is made.
Your insurance company will often handle the scrapping process if the vehicle is written off. You’ll need to provide them with the V5C log book, but keep the yellow section (for selling to the motor trade).
You don’t need to SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) the vehicle after it’s been scrapped, as the DVLA will automatically remove it from their records upon notification.
Failure to notify: If you don’t inform the DVLA, you could receive fines and still be responsible for the vehicle.

Here’s a step‑by‑step guide on how to become a verified ATF on our platform and start winning bids:
1. Become a Verified ATF Partner
Dedicated Signup: Start by visiting our dedicated ATF signup page.
Upload Your ATF Permit: To ensure compliance and build trust, you'll be required to upload a PDF copy of your current Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) permit.
Verification Process: Our team will verify your ATF permit details.
Receive Your Unique Code: Upon successful verification, we will mail a formal letter to your registered business address containing a unique alphanumeric identifier code. This code is crucial for completing your registration and allows you to bid anonymously.
Activate Your Account: Use this code to finish signup and unlock bidding access.
2. Browse & Bid Anonymously
Access Job Listings: View new scrap jobs including photos, videos, and file uploads.
Anonymous Bidding: Only your anonymous code is visible — not your business identity.
Obfuscated Location: Jobs initially show general map area or postcode district.
Leverage Date Flexibility: Choose jobs with collection windows that match your routes.
Communicate Anonymously: Use in-app chat to ask questions pre-bid.
3. Win a Bid & Commit
User Selects Your Bid: You’ll be notified immediately.
Mutual Identity Revelation: After the user pays the £50 deposit, both parties see full identity/contact info.
Final Date & Address Confirmation: You’ll agree on a final removal date and exact location.
Secure Your Commitment: Pay a non-refundable £20 fee. The full bid amount is authorized via Stripe.
4. Collection Day & Milestone Payment Release
Arrive & Check-In: Arrive at the confirmed date/time and check-in using the app.
Inspect & Confirm: Ensure the vehicle condition matches the listing.
Release Milestone 1: If compliant, release 50% of funds to the user. Commission is auto-deducted.
Load & Release Milestone 2: Once ready for transport, release remaining 50% of funds.
Comply with Regulations: Collect required legal documentation from the user.
What Happens If There Are Issues On Collection Day?
Our system is designed to provide clear resolution paths for issues that may arise:
1. Scenario: You Arrive, But the User or Car Can’t Be Found or cannot provide legal requirements.
You’ll check in via the app but find the car or user is not present or can’t meet documentation requirements.
Your Action: Report the issue through the app.
Consequence for User: Your £20 platform fee is refunded, but the user’s £50 deposit is captured.
2. Scenario: You Arrive, But the Car Does Not Match Description and You Refuse to Remove It.
If the car is different (wrong model, location, or missing parts), report it.
Consequence for User: Your £20 is refunded, and the user’s £50 deposit is captured.
3. Possible Outcomes of Dispute Adjudication:
If your rejection is deemed VALID (meaning the car was significantly misrepresented by the user) or legal requirements were not provided:
Your full bid amount authorization will be released, and no payment will be taken from you.
The user's £50 commitment deposit will be captured by our platform as compensation for the misrepresentation and your wasted journey.
If your rejection is deemed INVALID (meaning the car largely matched the description, and you are refusing without just cause or trying to renegotiate a lower cash price):
You will be obliged to proceed with the collection under the original agreed terms.
If you still refuse to proceed, your authorized bid amount (or a penalty portion of it, as per our Terms & Conditions) may be captured and transferred to the user and/or the platform as compensation for your non-compliance.
The user's £50 commitment deposit authorization will be released, as they were not at fault.
How It Works: Selling Your Scrap Car on Our Platform
Selling your scrap car is simple, secure, and transparent with us. Here's your step-by-step guide to getting the best price for your vehicle:
1. List Your Car & Set the Stage
Tell Us About Your Car: Start by providing key details like your car’s make, model, condition, and whether it's a runner or non-runner. The more accurate information you provide, the better bids you’ll receive!
Pick Your Ideal Date & Flexibility: Choose your preferred removal date and select a date flexibility option (Exact Date, Within 5 Days, or Within 10 Days). Offering flexibility can encourage Authorised Treatment Facilities (legitimate DVLA registered scrap dealers) to give lower bids, as it allows them to optimize their collection routes, saving them travel time and fuel.
Upload Photos & Videos: Enhance your listing by adding up to 3 images, a YouTube video URL, and any relevant files (like service history scans). This gives ATFs a comprehensive view of your car.
Your Privacy is Protected: While you'll provide your full address, your exact location will remain anonymous to bidding ATFs. They will only see an obfuscated area (e.g., your postcode district or a general map radius) to estimate travel. All initial communication will happen through our secure, anonymous in-app messaging.
2. Your Commitment & Getting Anonymous Bids
Authorise Your £50 Deposit: To confirm your commitment to the removal, we'll place a temporary £50 authorization on your card. This isn't a charge! This amount is automatically released back to you once your car is successfully removed without dispute. It's only captured by us if you cancel or if there's a valid dispute caused by your listing.
ATFs Bid Anonymously: Once your listing is live, verified Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) will review your car's profile and submit their bids (the amount they’re willing to pay you for the car). Their bids will appear anonymously (showing only an alphanumeric code) to protect their identity until you make a commitment. You’ll receive notifications as bids come in. You can communicate with the bidding dealers anonymously in-app or via email to clarify details or negotiate a mutually convenient time for pick up etc.
3. Select a Winner & Mutual Identity Revelation
Choose Your Bid: Review the bids and select the offer that’s best for you.
Mutual Identity Revelation: The moment you accept a winning bid AND pay your £50 commitment deposit, the anonymity is lifted! The winning ATF’s full identity (including company name, address, contact details, and ATF permit number) and your full contact details (including your exact pick-up address) will be simultaneously revealed so that each party can arrange the final steps.
4. Collection Day & Milestone Payments
Important: you must be able to show these things on collection day:
V5C
Photo ID (driving licence or passport)
Recent utility bill (must be dated within the last 3 months)
Legal ownership. Usually covered by the V5C but you may need proof of ownership if you are scrapping a deceased relative’s car for example.
If you cannot provide these things the ATF (scrap dealer) will not be able to complete the transaction on arrival and you will forfeit your £50 deposit.
ATF Arrives & Checks In: On your mutually agreed-upon removal date, the ATF will arrive at your location. They'll use our app's geolocation check-in feature to confirm their arrival.
Car Inspection: The ATF will inspect your car to ensure it matches the description in your job profile.
Milestone 1 Payment: If the ATF is satisfied, they’ll release the first milestone payment (e.g., 50% of the bid) through the app. We'll deduct our commission, and the remaining amount is transferred directly to you.
Loading & Milestone 2 Payment: Once the car is successfully loaded and ready for transport, the ATF will release the second milestone payment (the remaining balance). Again, our commission is deducted, and the rest is transferred directly to you.
Your Deposit Released: With the successful completion of the job, your £50 deposit authorization is automatically released.
What if there's an issue?
We aim for every scrap car removal to be smooth and successful. However, if unforeseen issues arise on the agreed collection date, here’s how our system manages them to ensure fairness:
1. Scenario: ATF Arrives, But Owner or Car Cannot Be Found or owner has not fulfilled "Legal Requirements for Removal Day"
This scenario occurs if the ATF arrives at the specified location and date, performs their geolocation check-in via the app to prove their presence, but then finds that you (the car owner) or the car are not present or ready for collection or you do not have the V5C, valid photo ID and recent utility bill.
ATF Action: The ATF will notify our platform through the app that they were unable to complete the pickup due to unavailability.
Consequence for the ATF: As they fulfilled their part by arriving, the full bid amount that was authorized on their card will be automatically released and will not be captured. This means no payment is taken from their bank account for this job.
Consequence for You (the User): Since the ATF made a wasted journey due to the car or owner not being available, your £50 commitment deposit authorization will be automatically captured by our platform. This helps compensate for the ATF’s time and travel, as well as our platform’s administrative costs for the failed removal.
2. Scenario: ATF Arrives, But Finds the Car Does Not Match Description and Refuses to Remove It
This occurs if the ATF arrives at the specified location and date, performs their geolocation check-in, but upon inspecting the car, they find its condition or details are significantly different from what was described in the job profile, making their original bid invalid or the owner cannot provide a photo ID, or a utility bill showing their address or the car’s V5C.
ATF Action: The ATF will refuse to remove the car and must immediately initiate a formal dispute through our app. They will provide clear evidence of the discrepancies (e.g., uploading new photos or videos to the job profile highlighting the differences).
Investigation by Platform: Your authorized £50 deposit and the ATF’s authorized bid amount will both remain temporarily held by Stripe while our platform’s team adjudicates the dispute. We will review all evidence provided in the job profile.
Possible Outcomes of Dispute Adjudication:
If the ATF’s rejection is deemed VALID (meaning the car was significantly misrepresented by you):
The ATF’s full bid amount authorization will be released, and no payment will be taken from them.
Your £50 commitment deposit will be captured by our platform as compensation for the misrepresentation and the ATF’s wasted journey.
If the ATF’s rejection is deemed INVALID (meaning the car largely matched the description, and the ATF is refusing without just cause or trying to renegotiate a lower cash price):
The ATF will be obliged to proceed with the collection under the original agreed terms.
If the ATF still refuses to proceed, their authorized bid amount (or a penalty portion of it, as per our Terms & Conditions) may be captured and transferred to you (the user) and/or the platform as compensation.
Your £50 commitment deposit authorization will be released and will not be captured, as you were not at fault.
